Known as the ‘Peerie’ (meaning fairy or small) or ‘Toonie dogs’ in its native country of Scotland, specifically the Shetland and Orkney Isles, the Shetland Sheepdog, referred affectionately to as the Sheltie, originated back in the 1700s as a herding dog. Because the Shetlands’ less than hospitable aspect resulted in diminutive livestock – cows and sheep and, of course, Shetland ponies – the Islanders needed a herding and watch dog that wasn’t so large as to frighten their tiny beasts, and the Sheltie was bred to serve that purpose.

My Kennel Name LEANAI (Lee- ann- eye ) is gaelic for children. All my shelties live with me in my home, from the moment they are born they are with me and part
of my very precious family, I believe in positive training methods, and follow trainers such as Karen Pryor.

Puppies are reared in my home, and are socialized and introduced to various situations etc from birth, and reared on the very best foods, always my mantra is to keep as natural as possible, and avoid chemicals especially I am retired now and able to invest all my love and time in my family of shelties.

I started showing in the 1970' and over the years I have shown and enjoyed several breeds including Maremmas, Border Collies, Rough Collies, Samoyeds. Showing at many shows including Crufts. I also ran obedience clubs and ring craft clubs and for a time my club had its own agility team with lots of different breeds enjoying showing off their skills, and raising money for charities.

Today I have a very small family of Shetland Sheepdogs, and I only breed from time to time when I am looking for a youngster for myself to show. Fae is genetically eye clear, and continues to be health checked. Only health checked, happy and friendly pure British shelties can be found at the home of LEANAI shetland sheepdogs.

All inquiries are welcome puppies sometimes available, support and advice freely given.
